Mark’s loaf is Butter Bakes very own campaign inspired by my Dad, Mark. My Dad passed away on June 9, 2017 from ventricular heart failure. His health continued to decline over the years prior. I spent days with him in the hospital the moment I was done culinary school for the day. The loss of my Dad was incredibly heartbreaking for me, I was very young and navigating a life of my own. He was a great Dad and has left us with many wonderful memories. I think of him often, especially now as a Mom myself.

 

My Dad was always the kind of person who saw something in everyone, no matter their situation. He made sure to always stop and chat with everyone, including Calgary’s most vulnerable population. There’s certainly no doubt that he treated them with dignity and provided an interaction of which they deserved.

 

Before the dream of Butter Bakes came to fruition, I worked as a red seal chef, primarily in non-profit organizations, most recently The Alex Community Health Center. I too had the opportunity to work with Calgary’s marginalized and vulnerable populations. The truth is that this work left a large imprint on my heart and forever changed the way I view the world.  

 

Ultimately, my Dad’s ability to see the light in everyone as well as the challenges of todays economy for so many has inspired us to create Marks loaf. The natural next steps of business ownership for me looks like combining my passion for good food while helping to enrich communities in a small way that feels feasible for us.
